Smithsonite

An unusual Smithsonite specimen, the one nodule has some damage, but this reveals the Azurite crystals that is on the matrix and inside the Smitsonite. Interesting specimen, ex. Bruce Cairncross.

 

Smithsonite, also known as zinc spar, is often found as a secondary mineral in the oxidation zone of zinc ore deposits. Historically, smithsonite was identified with hemimorphite before it was realized that they were two different minerals. This species was named in honor of James Smithson [1754-1829]. Smithsonite has become a highly collectable mineral that is found in an array of beautiful colours.

 

From the world renowned, multi-ore Tsumeb mine in Namibia. The mine was closed down in 1996, bringing to an end of an era of being one of the best specimen-producing mines in the world. Specimens from this locality are highly collectable and has also produced some of the best specimens. The mine is also known for being one of the richest in mineral species of which many new species has been described from here.
