About Rhipsalis

Rhipsalis is a large genus of epiphytic (or lithophytic) plants in the cactus family, generally known as mistletoe cacti.

A group of very unusual cactus species, commonly known as Jungle cacti. Unlike the very spiny cacti adapted to the arid regions these harmless plants are found in tropical areas, often in forests growing on rock ledges and in trees with the succulent stems drooping down like veils.

Caring for your Rhipsalis

  • Pot: Rhipsalis species has the natural tendency to droop down and is best suited to cultivation in hanging baskets. Baskets can be hung on the verandah or under trees.

  • Soil: The plants prefer organic based growing media like normal potting soil (composted bark), larger pieces of bark can be mixed in the medium or placed at the bottom of the container for additional drainage.

  • Light: Rhipsalis is adaptable to either shadier or brighter conditions. In areas with low humidity, the plants should be protected from direct summer sunlight.

  • Water: Despite the fact that these plants like ample watering, they also have the ability to withstand droughts. Rhipsalis plants are happy with weekly watering and spraying the plants in between creating the tropical environment they prefer.
