About Aloe

Aloe is a large genus of more than 600 species, commonly known as "aalwyn" (Afrikaans). Species of the genus is found in Africa, Arabia and Madagascar, with a great concentration of species in Southern Africa and Madagascar. Aloe is well known for the medicinal and cosmetic properties known in Aloe vera and Aloe ferox. These species are cultivated and harvested widely for these purposes.

Caring for your Aloe

  • Pot: The smaller Aloe species and varieties are well suited to containers or container gardening, they can also be planted in sheltered positions in the rockery. Larger Aloe species are best suited to the open-ground in the garden

  • Soil: The plants prefer a well drained soil, a mixture of sandy soil with some organic matter

  • Light: The brighter the light the more colourful your plant. Aloes prefer brighter conditions, they are more compact and colourful when bright light is given.

  • Water: Your plant should dry out for a few days between watering. Over-watering can cause the leaves to burst and crack along the length. Avoid watering the coldest months of the year.
